Vaudreuil—Soulanges

Vaudreuil—Soulanges occupies the triangular peninsula at Quebec's western frontier where the Ottawa River meets the St. Lawrence, directly west of the island of Montreal. The riding is coextensive with the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Regional County Municipality and stretches from the Ontario border at Riviere-Beaudette eastward to the communities of Ile-Perrot and Notre-Dame-de-l'Ile-Perrot. Its 23 municipalities range from the semi-rural farmland of the Soulanges canal corridor — Saint-Polycarpe, Saint-Zotique, Coteau-du-Lac — to the fast-growing suburbs of Vaudreuil-Dorion, Saint-Lazare, Pincourt, and Hudson. The landscape is generally flat along the rivers but rises into rolling hills toward Mont Rigaud at 221 metres. Majority francophone at roughly 58 percent, the riding also has notable anglophone, Romanian-Canadian, and French-born communities.

About the Riding

Vaudreuil—Soulanges is one of the fastest-growing regions in the Montreal metropolitan area. Young families priced out of the island have steadily moved west, drawn by more affordable housing, newer schools, and proximity to the Trans-Canada Highway corridor. The population surge — particularly in the Saint-Lazare and Ile-Perrot corridor — has brought both economic dynamism and growing pains: commuters face lengthy daily drives into Montreal, and local infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with residential development.

The riding's economy blends suburban services with pockets of agriculture and light industry. The Soulanges area in the southwest remains predominantly rural and ethnically French-Canadian, while the northeastern communities around Vaudreuil-Dorion have attracted a more diverse population. The bilingual town of Hudson, nestled along the Ottawa River, retains the character of an older anglophone enclave.

Schiefke held a comfortable margin in 2021, benefiting from the riding's moderate suburban electorate. The Bloc Quebecois provided the main opposition, though the Conservatives maintained a presence among voters drawn to the party's fiscal messaging. Transportation — particularly the lack of a commuter rail extension and highway congestion on Autoroute 40 — remained among the most frequently cited local concerns.
