Candidates
Angelo Iacono (Liberal) was the incumbent, first elected in 2015 after a previous attempt in 2011. A lawyer by training, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from McGill University and studied law at both the Université du Québec à Montréal (civil law) and the University of Ottawa (common law), and also attended the University of Lyon in France. He has been active in his community since a young age, drawing on both his Canadian and Italian cultural heritage.
Isabel Dion (Bloc Québécois) is a professional social worker and chairperson of the Bloc Québécois Citizenship Commission. She has been active in student movements and is involved in several community and environmental organizations, including the Centre québécois du droit à l'environnement, the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste, and Action Boréale. She previously ran as a Bloc candidate in LaSalle—Émard—Verdun in 2019.
About the Riding
The riding is named for Alfred Pellan (1906–1988), a celebrated Quebec painter and one of the first Canadian artists to achieve international recognition. The district blends suburban residential areas with commercial corridors and light industrial zones. Major employers in the broader Laval area include pharmaceutical company Bausch Health, food retailer Metro, and aerospace manufacturer Bombardier.
Laval experienced steady population growth in the years leading up to 2021, with its census population reaching about 438,000. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the region hard, causing widespread layoffs and business closures through 2020 and into 2021. Affordable housing, traffic congestion on bridges connecting Laval to Montreal, and improved public transit were recurring campaign issues.
The riding's multicultural character shaped the 2021 contest, with both major parties competing for support among immigrant communities, particularly in Pont-Viau and Duvernay. The strong Italian-Canadian presence in Laval has historically benefited Liberal candidates, while the Bloc Québécois sought to gain ground among francophone voters concerned about language policy and Quebec's autonomy.
