Candidates
Steven Blaney (Conservative) -- An engineer by training who spent fifteen years in Quebec's water purification and energy efficiency sectors, Blaney founded two environmental technology companies before entering politics. First elected in 2006 in the predecessor riding of Levis--Bellechasse, he rose through the cabinet ranks to serve as Minister of Veterans Affairs from 2011 to 2013 and then as Minister of Public Safety from 2013 onward. In the latter role, he introduced the controversial Anti-terrorism Act (Bill C-51) in January 2015.
Jacques Turgeon (Liberal) -- A producer at the National Film Board of Canada, Turgeon made agriculture and the revitalization of the forestry industry the centrepieces of his campaign. He positioned himself as an advocate for the rural communities that depended on the land-based economy.
Jean-Luc Daigle (NDP) -- Daigle carried the NDP colours in the riding, seeking to build on the party's 2011 gains in Quebec.
Antoine Dube (Bloc Quebecois) -- A former Bloc MP who had represented the riding of Levis from 1993 to 2003, Dube ran under the Bloc banner aiming to recapture support in a riding the party had held prior to 2006.
Andre Belisle also stood as the Green Party candidate.
About the Riding
The economic life of Bellechasse--Les Etchemins--Levis revolves around a mix of agriculture, forestry, and the light manufacturing and services sector tied to the greater Quebec City metropolitan area. Dairy and livestock farming dominate the Bellechasse lowlands, while the Etchemins highlands rely more heavily on forestry and wood products. The Levis portion of the riding benefits from proximity to Quebec City, with residents commuting across the Saint Lawrence via the Quebec Bridge or ferry. The riding had been a Conservative stronghold since Blaney's initial victory, and his tenure as Public Safety Minister -- particularly his sponsorship of Bill C-51, which expanded government surveillance and intelligence-sharing powers -- became a prominent issue during the campaign. Critics argued the legislation threatened civil liberties, while supporters contended it was a necessary response to evolving security threats.
